seattle preschool program

Pinehurst has two preschools, one at Hazel Wolf K-8 E-STEM School and the other at Northgate Community Center, and both are contracted Seattle Preschool Program Providers with the City of Seattle. Seattle Preschool Program (SPP) sites offer high-quality, affordable preschool to children across the City of Seattle. Tuition is free or on a sliding scale and is based on household size and parent/guardian income.

We provide a 30-hour per week preschool to children between the ages of three to five years (must be 3 years old by August 31st) and operate from September to June, following the Seattle Public Schools calendar year.

Our Program

At Pinehurst we believe that the family is the first and most significant teacher of young children.  We encourage a strong partnership between family and school to support your child’s growth and development.  We work in partnership with families, appreciating and supporting the close ties between children and their families.

Our program has adopted The Creative Curriculum® to provide in all learning domains: cognitive, social/emotional, language, math, literacy, and physical development.  The environment and interactions are intentionally planned to ensure children’s success in kindergarten and beyond.  The philosophy of The Creative Curriculum® is built on the belief that all children learn through active exploration of their environment and therefore the environment plays a critical role in learning.  Teachers at Pinehurst spend a great deal of time planning the environment for learning, then observing closely as things unfold. It is not uncommon to see teachers writing observation notes, taking photos, or talking with each other about what they are seeing. Our staff members delight in children’s play and learning, and we document, analyze and draw inspiration from it. Central to our approach is in-depth curriculum studies that grow from children’s interests and reflects their stages of development.

Culturally Relevant Anti-Bias Commitment

Pinehurst Preschool is committed to meeting the needs of children and families regarding culturally relevant and anti-bias practices and we refer to the four goals of Anti-Bias Education.

Goal 1: Each child will demonstrate self-awareness, confidence, family pride, and positive social/group identities.

Goal 2: Each child will express comfort and joy with human diversity; accurate language for human differences; and deep, caring human connections.

Goal 3: Each child will increasingly recognize unfairness (injustice), have language to describe unfairness, and understand that unfairness hurts.

Goal 4: Each child will demonstrate a sense of empowerment and the skills to act, with others or alone, against prejudice and/or discriminatory actions.
